Walmart has announced new technology designed to allow artificial intelligence (AI) agents to shop on behalf of customers while maintaining safeguards for spending, privacy, and purchase authorization.
The announcement, made October 21, 2026, introduces three components: Agent Profiles, the Walmart Agent Gateway, and operating rules for AI shopping agents.
How AI Shopping Agents Will Work
AI shopping agents are software systems capable of assisting customers with shopping activities, including locating products and completing purchases when authorized.
Walmart’s planned Agent Profiles will allow customers to establish separate permissions for individual AI agents. Customers will be able to review purchases made by these agents independently of their regular shopping transactions.
Customers may require approval for every purchase or establish spending limits, such as $50, $100, or $200.
They will also have the ability to revoke an agent’s access.
Consumer Protection and Privacy Safeguards
According to Walmart, its safeguards include several important restrictions.
AI shopping agents will not receive customers’ payment-card information or have permission to change payment methods.
Agents will be limited to information necessary for authorized shopping activities and must not take actions beyond the customer’s instructions.
Walmart also states that customers must approve agent purchases by default, although customers may authorize purchases within established spending limits.
The company may require additional approval even when a purchase falls within an authorized limit.
New Technology for AI-Powered Commerce
Walmart is also introducing the Walmart Agent Gateway, which is intended to provide a more direct connection between AI shopping assistants and Walmart’s shopping services.
The Gateway will begin with a beta program for companies and developers.
Walmart says this technology is designed to improve reliability while limiting unnecessary exposure of customers’ personal information and shopping histories.
The company expects Agent Profiles to become available within approximately one month of its October 21 announcement.
Why This Development Matters
The announcement illustrates an important challenge facing the artificial intelligence industry: how to allow increasingly capable AI systems to perform useful tasks without sacrificing human control.
As AI agents become more involved in financial transactions, consumer services, and business operations, organizations must consider authorization, accountability, privacy, and security.
For AI professionals and employers, these developments also highlight the growing importance of expertise in AI governance, cybersecurity, privacy protection, and responsible system design.
Responsible AI and the Future of Automation
AI agents have the potential to reduce repetitive tasks and improve convenience. However, systems that act on behalf of individuals must operate within clearly defined boundaries.
Walmart’s announcement provides a current example of how companies are approaching these challenges through spending restrictions, permission controls, transaction monitoring, and human oversight.
The broader lesson extends beyond retail: As artificial intelligence systems gain greater independence, maintaining meaningful human control remains essential.
